This morning at swim class, a woman said to me, “What are you doing? Your walking without the cane has gotten so much better?” I told her about Wahls and the autoimmune diet. She responded, “And exercise?” I said” Yes, that’s part of it, but the neuro healing is the food.” She said, “Well that explains it, you’ve increased your exercise.” I’m thrilled that my walking has improved so much that people I don’t know are noticing, but why is it so hard for people to accept that food might have something to do with it? I have mentioned it before, I do understand why. We are inundated with fad diets and cure all’s in the form of one super food after another, then there’s crazy diets like, “The Cabbage Diet” where you eat nothing but cabbage for a number of weeks to lose quick weight (the 90’s), etc. Why wouldn’t most people dismiss this. However, when the proof is staring you in the face, that does miff me. I have always been avid about exercise and that includes most of my years with this illness, since 2004. Exercise does not turn the damage around, never has. What it does do is give me a natural anti-depressant and build the muscles up around the damage to help offset where I am limited, but never does it eradicate the damage or make it any better. This is the food, period. Of course, it is also the combination of these factors:
- The inclusion of organic whole foods, nine cups of vegetables and fruits a day and the exclusion of dairy and gluten (put simply)
- Neurological Electrical Stimulation Therapy
- Detoxing via sauna’s or steam baths and Epsom salt baths
- Using untainted, non toxic products at home
- Meditation and positive thinking to decrease stress
- Sun therapy and vitamin D drops
On a different note, the best news I had today was that my Neurologist’s nurse called to tell me he is sending me scripts for electrical stimulation to rehab my left leg and another one to hopefully be covered by AISH to purchase the machine so I can continue at home after rehab.
Oh, and I lost another 2lbs!
Woot! I love Dr. Wahls, thank you!
